The complete recovery period for a labiaplasty usually lasts 12 weeks. During this time, the swelling subsides, scar tissue settles, and sensation returns.
However, you can usually resume sexual and physical activity a few weeks before the end of the 12-week recovery period. Typically, individuals can engage in sexual intercourse and exercise within 4 to 6 weeks.
If your job is not too physically demanding, you should be able to return to work within one week after the procedure.
Labiaplasty Recovery Instructions
To ensure that you have the best results and recovery, our surgeon Miss Tadiparthi advises the following post-surgery care after your labiaplasty surgery:
- Medication: You will be allowed home the same day after surgery with antibiotics and painkillers. It is important that when at home, you take these medicines regularly and that you keep mobilising.
- Stitches used in labiaplasty: Absorbable stitches are used and these all dissolve themselves. After 2 weeks if everything is healing well, you can gently pull out any loose ends of stitches.
- Underwear: Tight underwear and tight clothing should be avoided for 6 weeks after surgery.
- Sexual intercourse after labiaplasty should be avoided for at least 4 weeks.
- Work: It should be possible for you to return to work after 1 to 2 weeks with most standard occupations. You should be able to work from home after a couple of days if you are able to and felt well enough to do so.
- Driving after a labiaplasty is not recommended for at least 1 to 2 weeks after labiaplasty until you are able to do an emergency stop and your pain is well controlled. It is important that you inform your car insurance company of your surgery to ensure that your insurance is still valid while you are recovering.
- Exercise: Swimming and high intense cardiovascular exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks as these can increase the risk of wound infection and wound separation. Less strenuous activity e.g. weights, treadmill, cross trainer, long walks are fine to do after 4 weeks.
Wound care following labiaplasty surgery:
- The day after the surgery, you can start showering daily and although it may be uncomfortable, gently cleanse the labial area with water and a non-perfumed soap or body wash e.g. simple soap / shower gel. The area should be gently dried with a clean towel or tissue.
- An antibiotic ointment (chloramphenicol 1%) should be applied to the wounds at least twice daily for 2 weeks or until the wounds are fully healed.
- You will need to wear a clean panty liner or sanitary pad for around 2 weeks to catch any oozing of tissue fluid and blood.
- After 2 weeks, the wound should be mostly healed and dressings are often no longer required. The scars should be massaged ideally twice a day for example with Bio oil, shea / cocoa butter or E45 to help the labiaplasty wound healing process.
