There may be sagging or loose folds of skin and fat either in the upper parts of the thighs or the whole length of the thighs following major weight loss. A thigh lift (also called a ‘thigh reduction’) is an operation that aims to remove any excess loose skin in this area to give tighter, more contoured thighs and helps to minimise the rubbing of skin folds in the groin area.
In a standard thigh lift, a horizontal elliptical section of excess tissue is removed from the upper inner thighs leaving a scar in the groin area. In some patients where there is significant loose skin circumferentially along the whole length of the thigh, an extensive thigh lift procedure where a ‘T’ shaped section of skin and fat is removed leaving a scar in the groin as well as long vertical scar along the inner aspect of the thigh extending from the groin scar to the knee. Liposuction can also be performed with a thigh lift to improve any stubborn areas of fat and improve the contour of the thighs.
